Since it’s introduction in 1991, the first generation NSX shook the ground with innovations implemented in the car. It featured aluminum body, suspension and engine, making it the first production car with such features. It was exotic, beautifully designed piece of engineering that stood head to head with top supercars of the time. Unfortunately, the officials decided to halt the production in 2005, due to poor sales, as Honda only sold around 9000 units in 15 years. Its failure was never fully understood and it left a cliffhanger that needed an answer. Fortunately for the fans, in 2011, Honda CEO, Takanobu Ito, confirmed the rumors that the company is already working on the NSX’s successor. After the 2012 concept presentation, the fans were rest assured that a new 2016 Acura NSX is coming – and it’s a hybrid.
2016 Acura NSX engine specs
The all new 2016 Acura NSX features a 3.7 liter twin-turbo V6, with additional three electric motors – two of them located at each front wheel and one between the engine and the transmission assembly. Officials threw a hint of the total power of the car and it’s above 550HP. Although Honda always preferred VTEC valvetrains, implementation of turbines makes this the first turbocharged engine since RDX crossover. It is rumored that the engine will be positioned in the middle and it has an all-wheel drivetrain and a 9-speed, dual clutch, automatic transmission.
New 2016 NSX exterior design
The resemblance with the previous model is – nonexistent. The new Acura NSX is edgy, sharp, with a striking look and feel. It is considerable larger than its older brother and quite heavier. Although it features aluminum and sheet-molding compound body panels and carbon fiber floor, it weighs around 1600 kg – which is quite an increase compared to a 1360 kg of the previous model. Even though the front end has an arrowhead shaped design, without much room left to maneuver, the air-intake grille is large and smiling.
The strikingly sharp LED headlights look nothing like two blobs from the previous model. They are tilted about 10 degrees, featuring a row of six large LED lamps and a row of substantially smaller DRL LEDs, located just beneath. The back of the car doesn’t lack beauty and sophistication, neither. It features large, but elegant tail lights, connected with a stripe of LED lamps. Air extractor is located at the bottom of the bumper, with the exhaust being in the center.
2016 Acura NSX interior design
It’s not an overstatement to say that the new NSX has an interior that can be a match to more expensive and luxurious models. Both fascia and console are leather coated, with black and red stitching, to add a subtle contrast to the rest of the interior, exposing only fragments of carbon fiber parts. The floor is plush coated, as well as central part of the seats. The console is elevated, making it easier to access the controls. Mechanical buttons are kept to a minimum and most of them are located just beneath the board computer, featuring a large TFT screen. The steering wheel is stylish and sophisticated, with a flattened bottom, leather coated grips and a carbon fiber top, featuring subtle aluminum shifting pads.
Release date and price
The prices aren’t official, but it is safe to expect the price for NSX start from at least $112,000.Production of this model will begin in the fall of this year so we can expect it to be released at the end of 2015.
Although the car is long-awaited and the expectations are great, the overall impression is that the new 2016 Acura NSX won’t disappoint the fans.
