For all the technology it has to offer, $157,000 is not all that much money for the new NSX. Unfortunately though, the car has been put down by most automotive journalists for being a bit too tame and without a soul. Even though this may be the case, the car is actually one of the gems of today’s world. In order to make everyone see that, it looks like Honda may be readying a new version of the car. At this point these are just rumors but it looks like this new version may be released with the future 2019 Acura NSX Type R. That’s right! The Type R badge will finally return to the NSX after more than 2 decades. Even though the original was only available in Japan, it quickly became one of the most capable cars on the market at the time. It was actually able to outrun a Ferrari on a track which was not an easy feat to achieve at the time either.
Review
Even though the current model is a capable car, it looks like this isn’t enough for today’s market. The new NSX-R will be built on the same platform as the ongoing model. However, inside sources are saying the car will have more in common with the GT3 race-car. If this is the case then expect the production Type R to feature a brand new suspension system. The car is likely going to receive inboard suspension in the front and at the back with electronically adjustable dampers. These will be faster to respond than those on the regular model while also being lighter. The car is also expected to receive considerably lighter brakes in an effort to reduce unsprung weight. The end result should make the 2019 Acura NSX Type R faster to accelerate and to stop. It should also mean the car will be able to give the driver more feedback which is a small issue with the current production NSX.
Exterior and interior look
We managed to see quite a few Type R development prototypes up until now. Unfortunately none of them had any new parts on the exterior. This may suggest the upcoming Type R will be quite similar to the current NSX or that it may feature aerodynamic elements from the GT3 car in which case Acura doesn’t really need to test them anymore. Expect the Type R to be more aggressive than the base NSX with a larger splitter in the front, a larger diffuser and possibly a fixed rear wing. The wheels on the other hand are going to be just as big as before but Honda is expected to give the car better tires than those on the ongoing model.
Not much is known about its interior. However, considering this will be an all-out performance car, it is safe to assume it will be stripped down. Expect carbon-fiber seats with less padding than before, likely a new steering wheel and possibly different upholstery. The end result will be more similar to a race-car than to the current NSX.
2019 Acura NSX Type R specs
There have been quite a few rumors suggesting the 2019 Acura NSX Type R will ditch the electric motors. This has been said numerous times by now but even so, we doubt anything like this will happen. Even though the GT3 car doesn’t feature the electric motors, this is because that car has to comply with class regulations. Because of that, it is safe to assume the Type R will be quite similar to the ongoing production NSX. Expect it to boast a similar 3.5 liter twin-turbo V6 and a similar set of three electric motors. However, this time around the output is more than likely going to be closer to 650 horsepower and well over 500 lb-ft of torque. This bump should allow the new model to dip under 3.0 seconds for a 0 to 60 MPH run. Its top speed on the other hand might be lower than before. This is mostly because the car would feature a fixed wing which adds quite a bit of aerodynamic drag. However, it would also increase cornering speed which is vastly more important.
Release date and price
The price has yet to be revealed but if all of these make it into production, it is safe to assume the 2019 Acura Type R might cost north of $250,000 which would make it the most expensive Acura to date. The NSX Type R should be released in the 2018 as 2019 model.
